Mathematics Department
The college has a large and thriving Mathematics department, consisting of 17 full-time Mathematics teachers, including 6 expatriate teachers, who have a deep and broad experience of teaching A-level and IGCSE Mathematics and their equivalents. The local teachers also have international experience and, in some cases, teach fluently in English.
All students in the college study Mathematics to full A-level (AS and A2), after completing their IGCSE Mathematics and/or Additional Mathematics studies. The large majority of students complete AS and A2 Maths in one academic year. Over 50% of our students go on to do Further Maths full A-level. Our current Mathematics cohorts consist of:
Ninety two students in the G1 year, all doing IGCSE Mathematics (Extended) in one year.
One hundred and twenty-seven students in the G2 year (will increase to 153 from the next semester), all taking IGCSE Additional Mathematics. All our G1 and G2 students also receive teaching through Chinese Mathematics texts.
One hundred and sixty-five out of 185 students in the A1 group are doing full A-level Mathematics in one year, the rest (20 students) in two years.
92 out of 162 students in the A2 year are doing full A-level Further Mathematics, plus another 14 completing their A-level Mathematics.
The expectations are high, by any standards. In summer 2008, 77% of all G1 students achieved A* in IGCSE Mathematics (extended) within just one year, while over 66% of all A-level students received an A grade (the highest grade available at A-level). Four of our students are going to Oxford or Cambridge University to read Mathematics this summer. Our current A2 students achieved 19 S or 1 grades in this summer's STEP Mathematics papers 1, 2 and 3.
We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities for the students, particularly offering out-of-hours tuition, both in formal weekly sessions in classrooms and informally one-to-one. We now have a flourishing STEP club for those outstanding students preparing for Cambridge University entrance exams, and we offer Mathematics competitions, both within the school and also external ones such as the Canadian Mathematics Competitions.
